Shalya Tantra is one of the most ancient branches of Ayurveda, primarily focused on surgical practices. It is believed to have originated from Lord Dhanwantari, who shared this knowledge with his disciples, the most notable being Acharya Sushruta. Acharya Sushruta then documented this extensive knowledge in the Sushruta Samhita, intending to alleviate the suffering of people worldwide.

This ancient text serves as a testament to some of the earliest surgical treatments employed when conventional medical approaches failed. It laid the groundwork for a comprehensive field covering general surgery, orthopedics (including musculoskeletal conditions and fractures), Marma therapy (treatment of vital points), surgical oncology, urology, and other areas. The treatise provides significant insights into the understanding and management of conditions like intestinal obstructions, perforations, gangrene, abscesses, and chronic non-healing ulcers.

The surgical instruments devised in ancient times have stood the test of time, evolving into the modern tools used today. Notably, the branch of cosmetic surgery also originated during this era, with Acharya Sushruta being honored as the "Father of Plastic Surgery" for his pioneering techniques in grafting and flap surgeries. Today, Shalya Tantra continues the legacy of ancient sages who envisioned a society free of disease, employing methods capable of alleviating suffering where other disciplines may have proven inadequate. The refined surgical techniques of Shalya Tantra now address a wide range of conditions, including appendicitis, cholecystitis, hernias, benign cysts, tumors, fractures, dislocations, varicose veins, and anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures, rectal prolapse, and polyps.

The field also provides specialized treatments for urinary stone removal and unique management techniques for musculoskeletal and spinal disorders, such as intervertebral disc prolapse, ligament injuries, and rotator cuff tears. Shalya Tantra employs specific procedures like Agnikarma (thermal cautery), Kshara Karma , Kshara Sutra (medicated thread treatment), Rakta Mokshana (bloodletting), bandaging techniques, and Marma therapy. A special emphasis is placed on comprehensive ulcer management, showcasing Ayurveda's holistic approach to treating ulcers of various origins. In summary, the primary goals of Shalya Tantra are prompt diagnosis, rapid treatment, effective rehabilitation, and a strong commitment to ensuring a life free from pain and discomfort.
