Dravya Guna is the subject which deals with study of Plant kingdom, their Vedic origin, nature, Properties, Habit, Habitat, identification, study of morphology, all Characteristics, part used and their Effect on Human being.

For Successful Treatment, Our Acharyas have Mentioned 4 Important Components, in that after Vaidya, it is Dravya which is given Importance & that Dravya Should possess 4 important qualities

  • बहु कल्प : Susceptible of many modes of application
  • बहु गुण : Possess many good qualities,
  • संपन्न : Easily available and
  • योग्य : Suitable for human usage.

Dravya guna is the subject, where the Student studies in II phase of The Professional course in detail & applies the knowledge of the same in both Treatment & dietics, as the subject serves as Materia Medica of Ayurveda.

In Academics along with classical knowledge of Medicinal plants, we Educate our students regarding General pharmacology, Pharmarco-therapeutics, pharmacognosy and recent research updates.

The department is served & well maintained by highly skilled Teaching & non-Teaching faculty

We have well developed Dhanwantari Herbal Garden along with demonstration room in the Campus of IIAMR, compromising 550 Number of medicinal plants 329 species of plants, which is well maintained.

There is a Departmental Museum consisting of 304 Specimens of dry & wet drugs which helps the students to have sound knowledge of genuinity of part used in Medicinal plants. Herbarium files are also maintained in museum.

The Pharmacognosy Laboratory is well equipped to conduct Practical classes, so that the students will be able to learn Physico- chemical Analysis, Phyto-chemical Study & cross sections of the drugs

The models & the charts around the Department, Museum & Pharmacognosy Laboratory walls helps the students for extended visual learning , better observation & memorization of Important aspects of the drugs.

  • Home Remedies Programs to Create awareness in the public about prophylactic usage of herbal drugs
  • Ekamoolika prayoga i.e Mono drug Therapy - We train the students to prepare Amayika proyoga of herbal drugs having classical references
  • Organize field survey of Medicinal plants
  • Out Campus Visit to Plant Tissue culture Lab, Cultivated botanical gardens, Pharmacognosy lab, Q.C. Lab, DTL Lab
  • There will be educational trips inside and outside the city to explore the flora of different areas
  • We Celebrate World Environment day on 5th June of every year by distributing plant saplings to the public and bringing new plants to our herbal garden.
  • We Celebrate Van Mahotsav, “Tree Festival” from July 1st to July 7th of every year, Week long tree planting festival to raise awareness about the importance of trees, the damage caused by the de-forestation and the need for environmental conservation and promote bio diversity to combat climatic changes

The Department of Dravya Guna provides all the knowledge about the Medicinal plants which is very essential for an Ayurvedic vaidya for Proper utilization of them on Preservation of Health in Healthy individuals by using Dravyas as dietics and Prescribe the drugs as medicine in diseased individual for betterment of health.
