Department : Rasashastra & Bahishajya Kalpana

Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana is a key branch of Ayurveda, focussing on the preparation of Ayurvedic medicines using herbal drugs, mineral drugs or herbo-mineral drugs. This subject is a part of the second year curriculum for BAMS students. It is said that just as food is tasteless without salt, same way there is no meaning of science without the knowledge of Rasashastra. Also, we get the reference that herbal medicines can be prescribed only in curable diseases but mercurial preparations can be prescribed even in incurable diseases.

The department deals with identification of raw drugs, their proper samskara (processing) which includes Shodhana (purification), Marana (incineration). Because samskara bring changes in physical and chemical properties in a drug and it ensures safety and prevent toxicity. For the purpose of Marana that is bhasmikarana, both traditional and furnace methods are adopted. These procedures help the drug to attain Nano particle size for better absorption and quick results.

A full-fledged demonstration hall is maintained for the smooth conduction of practical’s. Students gain hands on experience, guided to perform practicals as per the classical reference where they learn to prepare different formulations such as churna, vati, guggulu, sneha, kshara, lavana Kalpana, bhasmas, etc.

The department is well equipped with a range of equipments like Khalvayantra, Patana yantra, Dolayantra, Sharavas, etc ; models such as Chullika, baluka yantra, kachhapa yantra, etc. are available and Charts displaying the classification of Rasadravyas (minerals drugs) like Maharasa, Uparasa, Sadharana rasa, etc are presented in the department. A museum is attached showcasing raw drug samples helping students to identify the drug. A well maintained departmental library is attached for study and reference purpose.

Pharmacy visits are organized during the Academic year to enhance industrial knowledge and offering insights into manufacturing processes.

The department also houses a quality testing laboratory equipped with analytical instruments like Hot air oven, Muffle furnace, Disintegration apparatus, pH meter, tablet hardness tester, etc. where research and practical studies are conducted. It is said that a properly prepared Rasaoushadhi will provide quick results, with enhanced properties even in smaller dose. Therefore, the analytical lab is used for the standardization and quality control of the prepared medicines.

The department is closely linked with the teaching pharmacy where production of medicines are carried out such as Bala taila, Ksheerbala taila, Talisadi churna, Samshamini vati, etc and these prepared medicines are provided for both OP and IP department of the hospital. Department also takes active participation in the preparation and distribution of Swarnaprasha Kalp, as well as involvement in Swarnaprasha camps.

Hence, it can be concluded that department plays a crucial role right from the raw drug collection to the distribution of prepared medicines.
